This is one of those books I both love and hate because of all the angst and back and forth between the two main characters. I cannot rate it five stars because I HATE when the H spends the ENTIRE book intending to leave the h he supposedly loves so much ( because of one stupid reason or another) and then does leave her for weeks and then decides they can finally be together making all the turmoil for nothing and then the h just goes along with it. I can't spend HOURS reading about his hurtful intentions and then hurtful actions only for the h to take him back because all the sudden HE'S ready. I was pissed for the h, then pissed AT the h for being so easily cowed. God, I'm neurotic. Lol of course I still recommend this bookTags : If You Desire (The MacCarrick Brothers, Book 2) [Kresley Cole] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. He tried to run....

In his youth, Hugh MacCarrick foolishly fell in love with a beautiful English lass who delighted in teasing him with her flirtatious ways. My favorite romance authors are Diana Gabaldon, Stephanie Meyer (so far), and Jane Austen. I've now added Kresley Cole to that list, although she obviously takes the story further ;-) She doesn't use slang or fashion that dates the characters, unless it is a historical romance. Her historical romance accuracy has been brought up in comments, but I didn't find any errors distracting. The heroes sound like real men, whereas some authors write the hero in such a way that I can't tell the difference between him and the heroine. Her heroes don't seem to cross the line into being misogynists either. Her heroines are relatable, usually strong, and never painfully oblivious or dumb. Some of her books are better than others, but compared to other authors in this genre they are all worthy of 5 stars.
Cole is new to me. Her style of writing, storyline, and characters are appealing. I tried another book from the Wroth series and decided to try this one and she hooked me.
The MacCarrick men are cursed Scots. They are cursed never to know love or have children. However, the curse is incomplete and obscured by blood. But, the curse is fated to complete its course inspite the stubborn Scots to do right. Courtland, cursed mercenary is rescued by Anna the Andorrian. Both try to do the right thing, however; differ on the method to achieve the goal. Courtland is less than courtly goaded by Annalia's taunts. The stubborn Scot is determined to save Annalia from Pascal, the conniving general, machinations while Anna is willing to yield to save her brother captured by Pacal. The sparing between the characters is subtly humrous and gently loving. The second storyline of Alexis and Olivia is equally interesting. Who will win in the game of strong will? That is the question that pushes you the continue reading.
I would recommend this book. the story hooks you and keeps you hooked.
Jane and Hugh have loved each other for 10 years, all of which being entire apart. Hugh fell in love with Jane when he was 18; Jane thought Hugh was going to marry her, just waiting for her to be of age. When she turned 18 Hugh left and never said goodbye. Jane was beyond devastated. She never did marry nothing equaled what she had with Hugh. Now ten years later Hugh is back and her father is demanding she marry Hugh for her protection. A dangerous associate of her father's is out for Janes blood. He sends Jane away with Hugh for her protection knowing no one will do a better job than the man in love with her. Their story is enchanting; the both desire each other so much and try to deny it, which never works. Hugh doesn't want to sentence her to death due to a family curse, so he pushes as hard as he can, giving in at times. Theirs is a very sweet story, she tries so hard to show him she would be a good wife to him, out of love he can't accept. Till she questions the curse and its truthfulness... I liked this one better than the first, IF YOU DARE, I look forward to reading the next....
In the second installment of the MacCarrick Brothers' trilogy, Kresley's heroine was once again a sensual, beautiful, and crafty virgin who used her powers of seduction to tempt, and keep on tempting, Mr. Hugh MacCarrick.
Since they shared a past, Jane knew her flirty ways would not be truly ignored. Hugh did hold out much longer than I think most men would've in his position.
My only negative critique, I wish she'd utilized Grey more in the story. For being the villain, he felt more like an afterthought to me. Maybe Kresley didn't want to put too much focus on him but since Hugh and Jane were brought back together because of the threat of Grey's retaliation against her father and Hugh himself, my opinion is he needed to be more prominent on the pages.
Ohmygod WOW.
I don't know why I was so hesitant to read Cole's historical romances. I knew she was a great writer because I'm in love with her Arcana series. And these books are definitely of the same caliber.
Here we have a historical romance with an assassin for a hero and a sexually progressive heroine. Two people who have been desperately in love with each other for well over a decade and have been kept apart for one reason or another. I liked these characters better than I liked Court and Anna. My only complaint was I didn't care for how much Hugh lost control at the end - I really liked him being the orderly, neat freak, in control, and steady guy.
I love that these are romances with a dark side. Cole does not shy away from death scenes. I can't remember the last time I read a romance where a character died "on screen" and I know I've never read one that as much description as this one did. The villain was super scary and the stakes were just as high in this book as they were in the last one. Very edge-of-your-seat and fast-paced. I've had a hard time putting these books down.
HIGHLY recommend.
