I've read hundreds of novels in this genre over the past 20 years and this book is one of roughly 2 dozen books that I consider keepers. Nick's story in this same series is also a favorite and a keeper.

Martha is in dire need of an heir so that she can stay in her home and protect her staff from the brother of her recently deceased husband. She employs the help of Theo who is newly arrived in town after being banished there by his father to learn responsibility and become acquainted with his inheritance.

It's an unusual story for sure and deals mostly with Martha's journey through her problems with intimacy. Theo struggles throughout the novel to help her confront her inability to accept love and pleasure as well as aids her awkwardness at engaging friendships in local society. In return, Martha helps Theo realize his full potential in the world beyond the pleasure seeking life he lived before he arrived. They are opposites who slowly find common ground and mutual respect as they help one another grow.

All of this occurs against the backdrop of their arrangement. Theo visits once a day attempting to provide her with a pregnancy and she helps guide him through the needs of the local villagers so that he can work to transform their lives.

This novel is truly a slow burn with wonderful character development despite the fact that they consummate their relationship within the first pages of the novel. In any other novel with a lessor author, the fact they come together so soon or Martha's aversion to intimacy could be a momentum killer but its so expertly written that I found it to be a true joy to watch them both discover themselves and also one another. I loved the character of Theo and was so happy for Martha when she finally was able to love, joyfully accept intimacy and be loved loved in return.

Amazing read if you like a more complicated and truly character driven romance.

If you are looking for the usual flirtation, chase, and sex equals love type of story, you might be disappointed. There is a love story and plenty of sex.

The emphasis is more on the cultural mores and limited expectations for women in that time period. It may take more empathy and maturity than many young readers have acquired as yet to fully comprehend the meaningfulness of this novel. This is not a modern-day situation set in earlier times. The author is, until the end, true to the times.

The hero is unbelievably respectful and almost instantly lovable in spite of his immaturity and "faults." His kindness and imagination won me over. She was harder to sympathize with because, in spite of her trying to be a good person, she arrogantly believed her standards and beliefs should apply to everyone. She also rationalized that the outcome would justify the means. (How many cruel and inhumane acts have been carried out by "good" people thinking they knew what was best and the "end would justify the means." ! )

Her conscience would not allow her to enjoy anything that she felt was not quite right and honest. As long as she didn't "enjoy" carrying out her plans, she felt justified and propped up her feelings of self-worth. Kind of a martyr syndrome it seemed to me.

One of the main points illustrated by the author that can be applied today or anytime is that sincere admiration of your partner can make everything you share in life that much more enjoyable and meaningful - including sex.
FINAL DECISION An intellectually interesting twist on the normal romance story, but ultimately I found the book too uneven to be a great book.

THE STORY Martha Russel is newly widowed and determined to protect the people of her estate from her husband's brother who stands to inherit. So she concocts a scheme she will quickly get pregnant and pass the child off to as her husband's heir. She approaches a temporary newcomer to the area, Theo Milkwood, with a proposition. She will pay him to impregnate her. Theo, sent by his father to learn some responsibility, is insulted by Martha's offer, but is happy to take the widow up on a month of irresponsible sex.

OPINION I wanted to really love this book. There was something fresh and interesting in the story. The relationship between the hero and heroine begins cold and through their interactions, I loved how the two of them change and find something special together.

That first part of the book, however, was pretty difficult to get through. There is a lot of unsatisfying sex to get through. Unfortunately, when things change for them, the satisfying encounters don't really outweigh the two thirds of book that come before.

What I did like was the development of the heroine. I never really liked her much. She's not a character that I came to really love, but I found her journey intriguing. This was an interesting exercise of a book to read, but it didn't really seem like a book that I would voluntarily pick up again.

Parts were really good, and I didn't really mind way the relationship between the characters develop, but I left the book really not feeling that the happy ending outweighed everything that went before.

WORTH MENTIONING I think the book might have been better with an epilogue showing these characters happy together.
