If you asked (you wouldn’t, but if you did) what the perfect book was, I’d be hard-pressed not to answer with: Fast Machine.

For starters, the book is beautifully designed, and despite its length of nearly 400 pages, is small enough to fit inside a purse or coat pocket (which doesn’t mean you should steal it; the book won’t cost you much, anyway).

Secondly, the stories therein (like, 100 of them!) are funny, honest, brave, sad, poignant; compact and durable; a pleasure to the eyes and to the mind and to the heart—they have wonderful openings (“I was eight months pregnant with a black eye. More importantly, I was late for work and my shirt still wasn’t ironed. I didn’t have time for any of Jenny’s s***.”), quirky titles (“Samuel L. Jackson Is Not a Good Name for a Rabbit”), juicy middle portions (“I had a bad habit of making my life about the people who were no longer in it.”), and closing lines (“She will remain alert and focused, knowing she is moving toward something again, rather than away.”) which, like any literature worth a damn, leave you winded, lifted.

Basically, Elizabeth Ellen’s Fast Machine is a warm friend you’ll need while navigating the soul’s many cold spots; a contemporary classic; most crucial, indeed.

Fast Machine Elizabeth Ellen 9780982530177 Books Reviews

The stories themselves are almost uniformly good or great, with interesting or at least affable leads. This is one of the best alt-lit stories collections I've read.
The brutality with which the prose hits you is akin to that of a prize fighter punching you hard and fierce in the face. There is no let up each story is beautiful and demands your attention. "Winter Haven, Florida, 1984" and "I Will Destroy You" are fantastic stories.
Tight, seductive prose. Dusty, tasty and sexy. The true art of a master storyteller.
READ Elizabeth Ellen, it will make your day.
She's from my hometown and her wit and writing style are perfection
Fast Machine is a beautifully articulated piece of short stories that all somehow overlap and intertwine, leaving you with a sense of wholeness. Elizabeth writes herself vulnerable in ways that eschew fiction and nonfiction until you are grounded into a raw sense of reality in manic self reliance, insecurity, and sincerity. Elizabeth successfully bleeds superficiality onto mugging candor in a level that gets up close and personal and finds relevance to any reader. The emotional value carried in the pages of Elizabeth Ellen's writing finds endless depth for readers to pour meaning into while still managing to stand concrete and aggressively yet seductively absolute. The writing in Fast machine will spin you around, confuse you, and ground you from one page to the other with a unique, stoic and seemingly all knowing voice.
This collection has too many stories in it. Period. The collection itself is somewhere around 350 pages, has like 100 stories in it (not sure the exact number). There do not need to be this many stories in one collection, especially when some of them really feel like throwaways compared to the others. There are some truly excellent, poignant stories in here that sit at a good length where the characters and the narratives can be wholy absorbed and appreciated. There are other "stories" that are four lines long. What am I meant to make of these? Should I just keep pushing through, reading as much as I can per sitting? The staggering amount of stories contribute to lessen the overall weight of each one. If you blaze through this book, you're not going to absorb everything; it'll all wash over you and you won't remember any of it. So...how long should it take you to read this? It took me almost a year and a half and it still didn't feel like long enough to take everything in. Like I said, there are some truly great stories included (Period Sex, Habitrail, Halfsies, etc.) and I wish it was a shorter volume that collected only the more substantial narratives. BUT, the best of the best is still included in here, so it's certainly worth a read.
Superb story telling. Loved every one. 'Fistful' is my favorite.
